An Urban Winery Rooted in Sustainability
Ilana Freddye
Coopers Hall winery is dedicated to keg production, the first of its kind in Oregon.
Coopers Hall is a small urban winery dedicated to sustainable, ethically produced wines, and views winemaking as an evolving process that changes with the seasons, moods, and elements. Our Portland winery is uniquely located at the northeastern tip of the Willamette Valley, allowing us to grow and source grapes from high-quality, thoughtfully tended vineyards throughout the Pacific Northwest. From delicate Pinot Noir and cool climate Alsatian Riesling grown at our L.I.V.E. certified, 18-acre Willamette Valley estate, to mellow and balanced Malbec from the Rogue Valley, we offer food-friendly, fruit-forward wines that can be enjoyed during a fancy dinner in town, or a night watching Netflix on the couch. Our dedication to packaging in the keg format has allowed us to save over 500,000 bottles and the associated labels, corks, and boxes from the waste stream. In Oregon, we are proud to be the first winery to adopt refillable packaging.
Alexeli, Our Estate Vineyard
Coopers Hall partner Phil Kramer is the owner and winemaker of Alexeli Vineyard, in the East Willamette Valley near Molalla/Silverton. Phil purchased the property in 2007; the 18 acre vineyard was planted in the 1980s, is LIVE certified and creates the foundation of sustainability for the Coopers Hall wine brand. The vineyard is planted with Chardonnay, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. At Coopers Hall we joke that most urban wineries come about because the winemaker lives in the city and doesn’t want to commute to the valley to make wine, but it’s actually the opposite in our case!
Keg Wine = Wine On Tap
Coopers Hall is leading the movement in keg wine - in 2014 we opened as the first keg-focused winery in the state of Oregon. We’re taking a completely holistic approach to creating an ethical wine brand - from the farming practices and production, right to the packaging. In the past decade Coopers Hall has avoided using over 500,000 single-use glass bottles.
Don’t be discouraged, wine on tap is still a premium product. Coopers Hall is breaking down preconceived notions that wine is precious, should only be enjoyed by a certain kind of person and needs to look and be served in some kind of way. Pouring wine from a tap brings the fun back and also creates a more accessible product, both in price and distribution. Below is the long list of restaurants, bars, tap houses and event spaces that sell Coopers Hall wine on tap, making local Oregon wine available at a reasonable glass price.

Refillable Bottles
In 2019 Coopers Hall started a relationship with OBRC (Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative) to put Coopers Hall wine in bottles for the first time. But not just any bottle, an Oregon-made reusable bottle, with a local program to collect, wash and redistribute commercially, so the bottles can be reused and refilled up to 25 times! Coopers Hall was the first winery to join the program, which uses 500 mL brown glass bottles, more widely adopted by breweries and cideries.
These bottles are perfect for parties, picnics, gifts and weeknight enjoyment. When you’re done, redeem at any BottleDrop location and they’ll go right back into the system.
